Slate, stone and weather in Free State
Free State homes face cold, frosty winters and hot, stormy summers, which is hard on outdoor stone. Frost lifts poorly bedded paving and cracks tiles laid on weak screeds, so flexible adhesive, a full bed and movement joints matter. Hail damages roof slates and tiles across the open plains. Bloemfontein has older sandstone and Victorian-era houses, while farmhouses and guest lodges use slate and stone cladding on verandas and fireplaces. Tile shops, paving yards and builders' merchants cluster in the larger towns, and delivery to farms and smaller towns is routine.
Typical black slate tiles requests in the area come from:
- Suburban homes: honed black slate in kitchens, bathrooms and entrance halls of family homes
- Farms, lodges and wine estates: dark slate floors and hearths in farmhouses and lodges that hide daily wear
- Older and heritage homes: dark slate hearths and hall floors that sit well with period features in older homes
- New builds and developments: black slate chosen early so floor levels, sealing and lighting suit the finished room
- Restaurants, hotels and offices: black slate floors and bar fronts in restaurants, hotels and showrooms
- Townhouses and complexes: black slate bathrooms and small entrance floors that make compact rooms feel smart
