Stone cladding changes the look of a wall, pillar or braai, but it only lasts if it is fixed properly. A good stone cladding installation needs the right base, the right adhesive and care around damp. SlateTiles.co.za is a free quote service. Fill in one form and we pass your request to independent cladding installers in your area, who quote you directly. There is no fee and no obligation. We do not sell stone or do the work.

Types of cladding that get installed

Installers work with several kinds of stone. The most common are:

  • Stacked slate or quartzite strips, which give a layered, textured face
  • Natural stone cladding in sandstone, quartzite and similar, in irregular or cut shapes
  • Thin stone veneer panels or tiles, which are lighter for walls
  • Corner pieces, which wrap pillars and corners neatly

Slate cladding often shows copper, rust, grey and green tones. Ask the installer to lay out a sample before the whole wall is done. Check how the pieces are grouted or dry-stacked, as this changes the look and how the wall sheds water.

Where cladding is used

Cladding goes on more than feature walls. Requests commonly cover:

  • outside walls, gate pillars and boundary walls
  • entrance walls and the area around the front door
  • cladding a braai, patio wall or outdoor kitchen
  • fireplace surrounds and inside feature walls
  • retaining walls and planters

Outdoors, the wall faces rain, UV and, in the Highveld, winter frost. In coastal areas, salt air adds another strain. Tell the installer where the wall is and which way it faces. A wall that gets full afternoon sun and driving rain needs more care than a sheltered one.

How stone cladding installation is done

Method matters more than the stone. A careful installer will usually:

  • check that the wall is sound, clean and free of loose paint or plaster
  • apply a bonding coat or key, so the adhesive grips the surface
  • use a suitable flexible adhesive, not plain mortar, and back-butter heavy pieces
  • work from the bottom up, mixing pieces from several boxes for an even colour
  • include drip details, flashing and a damp-proof course where needed

Heavy stone on weak walls can fall off. Ask the installer to confirm the wall can carry the load. Also ask how the top of the wall is finished, so that water cannot run in behind the stone.

What affects your quote

Installers quote from the wall and the stone. Be ready to give:

  • the wall area in m², and how high the work goes
  • the type and weight of the stone, and whether you are supplying it
  • the wall material, such as face brick, plaster or concrete
  • whether corners, pillars or curved sections are involved
  • access, such as scaffolding or a second storey
  • grouting, sealing and finishing details

In an estate or complex, check the body corporate or HOA approval rules for changes to the exterior. Sealing the finished cladding is optional, but it can make dust and rain marks easier to clean off later.

Comparing quotes for stone cladding installation

The lowest figure is not always the best deal. When your quotes arrive, check:

  • Scope: exactly what is included, from surface preparation and materials to cutting, sealing and clean-up.
  • Materials: the slate, adhesive, grout, sealer or fixings allowed for, and who buys and delivers them.
  • Timing: when the work can start, how long it takes, and curing or drying time before the area can be used.
  • Guarantee and terms: any workmanship guarantee, deposit, payment stages and how long the price holds.

What to include in your request

  • State the wall area in m² and the height of the work.
  • Describe the wall, such as face brick, plaster or concrete, and its condition.
  • Say whether you have chosen the stone or need help picking one.
  • Mention corners, pillars, curves or a braai that need special pieces.
  • Add your suburb, access details and any estate or body corporate rules.

Frequently asked questions

How is stone cladding fixed to a wall?
Cladding is normally stuck to a prepared, sound wall with a flexible, polymer-modified adhesive, and sometimes with a bonding coat first. Heavy pieces may also need mechanical fixing. The installer should check the wall, the weight of the stone and the exposure before choosing a method.
Can cladding go on an existing painted or plastered wall?
Often yes, but the surface must be sound, clean and able to bond. Loose paint, flaking plaster and damp must be dealt with first. A bonding coat may be needed. The installer should look at the wall and test it before agreeing to the method.
Do I need approval to clad an outside wall?
In an estate, complex or HOA, you will usually need written approval for exterior changes. Some larger structural work may fall under National Building Regulations. Ask the installer what applies to your job, and check your local municipality or body corporate rules.
