A good roof is more than its tiles. Roof underlay, battens, fixings and flashing keep wind-driven rain and dust out. SlateTiles.co.za is a free quote service. Tell us your roof type, the area in m² and which accessories you need. We pass your request to independent roofing suppliers in your area, who quote you directly. There is no fee and no obligation. We do not sell materials and we do not do the roofing. You simply compare what suppliers offer.

Underlay and membranes

A membrane under roof tiles is a second line of defence. It catches wind-blown rain, dust and condensation that get past the tiles or slates.

  • Breathable underlay lets moisture vapour out of the roof space.
  • Reflective foil underlay also helps reduce heat gain in summer.
  • Rolls come in different widths and strengths. Heavy slate needs a robust product.
  • Underlay must be laid with proper overlaps and fixed neatly to the rafters.

Ask suppliers which roof underlay suits your roof pitch and tile type.

Battens, fixings and fittings

The smaller parts decide how long a roof lasts. Common items include:

  • Battens of treated timber, set to the head lap of the slate or tile.
  • Copper nails or stainless steel nails and slate hooks to fix slates. These resist rust.
  • Storm clips for roof tiles hold tiles down in strong wind, which matters on the Highveld and in coastal gales.
  • Ridge roof tiles and ridge fixings to finish the top of the roof.
  • Gutter brackets, bird comb and eaves fittings.

Flashing and weatherproofing

Joins and edges are where most leaks start. Flashing seals them.

  • Metal flashing goes around chimneys, skylights, walls and valleys.
  • Check that flashing metals are compatible, as some react with each other and corrode.
  • Roof sealant and bedding mortar suit ridges and hips, but both age and need inspection.

Old slate-look roofs may contain asbestos-cement. Do not cut, drill or break them. If you are unsure what your roof is made of, have it checked by a qualified person before any work starts.

What affects your accessories quote

Suppliers will ask about:

  • The roof area in m² and the pitch.
  • The roof covering: natural slate, fibre-cement, concrete or clay.
  • The items you need, such as underlay, battens, hooks, clips or flashing.
  • Metal choice, for example copper or stainless steel fixings.
  • Delivery to site, and whether you also need the roofer.

A roof plan or photos help suppliers list what you need.

Comparing roofing accessories quotes

Natural stone varies from batch to batch, and prices move with imports, stock and transport. When quotes arrive, check:

  • Exact product: the colour, finish, size and thickness, and whether it is calibrated, so every quote is for the same thing.
  • Quantities: the price per m², box, pallet or piece, and how much is allowed for cuts and breakage.
  • Stock and delivery: in stock or on order, delivery to site or collection, and any off-loading charge.
  • VAT and returns: whether VAT is included, how long the price holds and whether unopened boxes can go back.

What to include in your request

  • State the roof area in m² and the pitch.
  • Say what roof covering you have or are planning.
  • List the accessories you need, such as underlay or flashing.
  • Mention your preference for copper or stainless steel fixings.
  • Give your site address and say if you need delivery.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need roof underlay under slate or tiles?
It is widely used as a second line of defence against wind-driven rain and dust, and many roofers recommend it. Requirements depend on the roof covering and the National Building Regulations. Ask your roofer or supplier what applies to your roof.
Why use copper or stainless steel nails for slate?
Slate roofs can last many decades, and ordinary steel nails rust far sooner. Copper and stainless steel resist corrosion, so slates stay fixed. Slate hooks serve the same purpose. Ask suppliers which fixings suit your slate size and batten spacing.
What are storm clips and do I need them?
Storm clips lock roof tiles down so strong wind cannot lift them. They are common in exposed areas, such as open Highveld sites and the coast. Your roofer can advise on how many your roof needs, based on its pitch and exposure.
Can I buy accessories without the roofer?
Yes. Many suppliers sell underlay, battens, fixings and flashing as supply only. If you are not an experienced roofer, ask a qualified roofer to fit them. Poor fixing or flashing can cause leaks that are costly to trace later.
