Choosing slate tiles outdoor gives you a tough, natural surface for stoeps, patios, braai areas and pool surrounds. SlateTiles.co.za is a free quote service. You send one request and we pass it to independent slate suppliers and installers in your area, who quote you directly. We do not sell tiles or do the work ourselves. There is no fee and no obligation. You can compare outdoor slate tiles from several suppliers before you buy.

Outdoor slate tiles and finishes

For outdoors, most people choose a natural cleft finish. The split surface gives good grip when wet, which matters around pools and on steps. Honed slate looks smart but can be slippery outside.

  • Cleft rustic slate: copper, gold, rust and green tones, popular for stoeps and braai areas.
  • Charcoal and black slate: a dark, modern look that suits contemporary gardens.
  • Tumbled slate: softened edges for a worn, informal patio.

Ask for tiles rated and sold for exterior use, and view a sample in daylight.

Where outdoor slate is used

Slate patio tiles suit covered and open patios, entertainment decks, garden paths, steps and pool surrounds. They also work for stoeps on farmhouses and lodges, and for restaurant terraces.

Slate copes well with South African weather. It handles summer storms in Gauteng and KwaZulu-Natal, and winter rain in the Western Cape. On the Highveld and in the Free State, frost can damage poorly laid tiles, so a solid bed and good drainage matter. Near the coast, salt air makes sealing and regular rinsing important.

Laying slate outdoors

Outdoor slate is only as good as the base under it. Discuss these points with your installer:

  • Falls: a slight slope so water runs off, away from the house.
  • Adhesive: flexible, polymer-modified adhesive and a fully solid bed, with no voids where water can collect and freeze.
  • Movement joints: needed because sun and cold make the slab move.
  • Sealing: an impregnating sealer protects against stains and moisture. Clean with pH-neutral products only.

What affects your quote

We do not give prices. A supplier will quote for your actual project, and the figure depends on:

  • The area in m² and the shape of the patio, including steps and edges.
  • The finish, thickness and colour of the slate.
  • Whether tiles are calibrated or uncalibrated.
  • Delivery to your property, including access for a truck or pallet.
  • Adhesive and sealer, and whether you want installation.

Comparing outdoor slate tiles quotes

Natural stone varies from batch to batch, and prices move with imports, stock and transport. When quotes arrive, check:

  • Exact product: the colour, finish, size and thickness, and whether it is calibrated, so every quote is for the same thing.
  • Quantities: the price per m², box, pallet or piece, and how much is allowed for cuts and breakage.
  • Stock and delivery: in stock or on order, delivery to site or collection, and any off-loading charge.
  • VAT and returns: whether VAT is included, how long the price holds and whether unopened boxes can go back.

What to include in your request

  • State the patio or stoep area in m².
  • Say whether it is covered, open or around a pool.
  • Describe the base: new slab, existing slab or old tiles.
  • Name the colour and finish you prefer.
  • Mention steps, edges and access for delivery.

Frequently asked questions

Are slate tiles suitable for outdoor use in South Africa?
Yes, if you choose a tile suited to exterior use and lay it correctly. Slate is dense and handles sun, rain and heat. On the Highveld, make sure the bed is solid and water drains away, so frost does not crack tiles or lift them.
Are slate patio tiles slippery around a pool?
A natural cleft surface has good grip, which is why it is popular around pools and on steps. Honed slate is smoother and can be slippery when wet. Ask your supplier for a cleft finish, and keep the surface clean of algae.
Will outdoor slate fade or go white?
Slate keeps its colour well, but a topical sealer can wear in the sun, and white patches may appear. These may be efflorescence, the salts coming through from the screed, or a failing sealer. Re-sealing with a suitable product usually fixes it.
Can I use slate tiles for a stoep over an existing slab?
Often yes, if the slab is sound, clean and has a proper fall. Your installer will check for cracks, damp and loose areas first. Some slabs need repair or a screed first. Describe the slab in your request so suppliers can advise.
