Slate floor tiles are hard-wearing, cool underfoot in summer and suit both modern and traditional homes. SlateTiles.co.za is a free quote service. You fill in one form and we pass your request to independent slate suppliers and tilers in your area, who quote you directly. We do not sell tiles or lay them ourselves. There is no fee and no obligation. It is an easy way to compare slate flooring options before you commit to a floor that will last for decades.

Choosing slate floor tiles

A slate floor tile can be a natural cleft, honed or brushed finish. Each behaves differently underfoot and in daily cleaning.

  • Natural cleft: textured and grippy, good for entrance halls and covered patios. It holds more dirt, so it needs more cleaning.
  • Honed: smoother and easier to wipe, popular in kitchens and bathrooms.
  • Brushed or tumbled: a softer, aged look with rounded edges.

Slate comes in charcoal, grey, black, green and multicolour tones. Large formats look calm in open-plan rooms. Smaller sizes suit passages and bathrooms.

Where slate flooring works best

Slate flooring is a good match for kitchens, living areas, entrance halls and bathrooms. It handles foot traffic, pets and children well. It also copes with underfloor heating, because stone conducts heat evenly.

Slate stays cool in summer, which suits the Lowveld and the coast. In winter on the Highveld, it can feel cold, so many owners add rugs or underfloor heating. Slate also works in restaurants and shops where a floor must take heavy use.

Installing slate floors properly

A good slate floor depends on the preparation as much as the tile. Check these points with your tiler:

  • Screed: it must be flat, sound and fully cured. Moisture in a new screed can cause efflorescence, the white salt bloom that rises through the stone.
  • Adhesive: use a flexible, polymer-modified adhesive and a solid bed with no voids under the tile.
  • Movement joints: needed in larger rooms and at doorways.
  • Sealing: seal after grouting, and clean only with pH-neutral cleaners. Never use acid on slate.

What affects your quote

We never give prices on this site. A supplier will quote for your actual floor, and the final figure depends on:

  • The floor area in m², plus an allowance for cuts.
  • The finish, size and thickness of the tile.
  • Whether the tile is calibrated or needs a thicker adhesive bed.
  • Delivery to your site, including access and distance.
  • Whether you want supply only, or tiling and sealing as well.

A floor plan or a few photos help suppliers quote accurately.

Comparing slate floor tiles quotes

Natural stone varies from batch to batch, and prices move with imports, stock and transport. When quotes arrive, check:

  • Exact product: the colour, finish, size and thickness, and whether it is calibrated, so every quote is for the same thing.
  • Quantities: the price per m², box, pallet or piece, and how much is allowed for cuts and breakage.
  • Stock and delivery: in stock or on order, delivery to site or collection, and any off-loading charge.
  • VAT and returns: whether VAT is included, how long the price holds and whether unopened boxes can go back.

What to include in your request

  • State the floor area in m² for each room.
  • Say whether the floor is new screed or an existing floor.
  • Name your preferred finish and colour.
  • Mention if you have underfloor heating.
  • Say if you want supply only or tiling and sealing as well.

Frequently asked questions

Is slate a good choice for a kitchen floor?
Yes. Slate is dense, durable and handles heat and heavy traffic. A honed or lightly textured finish is easiest to keep clean. Seal it well to guard against oil and wine stains, and use pH-neutral cleaners. Ask your supplier to show you a sealed sample.
Is slate flooring slippery when wet?
A natural cleft surface has good grip, even when wet. Honed slate is smoother and can be slippery with water or soap. For bathrooms and entrance halls, ask your supplier about the finish and whether the tile suits wet areas before you order.
Can slate floor tiles go over underfloor heating?
Usually yes. Stone conducts heat well, so slate warms evenly. The screed must be fully cured and heated gradually before tiling, and you need a flexible adhesive suited to heated floors. Confirm the details with your tiler and the heating installer.
Does SlateTiles.co.za lay slate floors?
No. SlateTiles.co.za is a free quote service and does not supply tiles or do any tiling. We pass your request to independent suppliers and tilers near you, and they contact you directly. There is no fee and no obligation to accept a quote.
