Slate, stone and weather in Kathu
Kathu is a mining town on the Kalahari edge, with newer face-brick houses, complexes and lodges around the camel thorn veld. Owners use slate and stone on patios, pool surrounds, carports and entrance halls, and rustic stone suits the red sand surroundings. Summers are fiercely hot, so dark slate can burn bare feet in full sun, and UV breaks down sealers fast. Cold winter nights and rare heavy storms add movement, so use flexible adhesive, a full bed and movement joints. Dust makes honed or sealed floors easier to keep clean. Local merchants stock basic tiles, but slate, cladding and special orders are delivered from Kuruman, Kimberley or Gauteng.
Typical slate floor tiles requests in the area come from:
- Suburban homes: grey slate floors running through the kitchen, dining room and lounge of family homes
- Townhouses and complexes: slate floors in compact living rooms and kitchens, with noise rules from the body corporate
- Farms, lodges and wine estates: tough slate floors in farmhouse kitchens, boot rooms and guest lodges used every day
- New builds and developments: slate floors specified early so screed levels and doorways suit the finished tile
- Restaurants, hotels and offices: slate floors in restaurants, hotel lobbies and showrooms that see heavy foot traffic
- Security and golf estates: large honed slate floor tiles across open-plan living areas in modern estate homes
Why get a quote in Kathu first?
Prices for slate floor tiles in Kathu depend on the exact stone, finish, thickness, quantities, current stock and delivery. A quote based on your details is the quickest way to know what you will pay, and it shows what is included before anything starts.
What to include in your request
- State the floor area in m² for each room.
- Say whether the floor is new screed or an existing floor.
- Name your preferred finish and colour.
- Mention if you have underfloor heating.
- Say if you want supply only or tiling and sealing as well.
The more detail you give, the more accurate your quote will be.
