Slate, stone and weather in Kathu
Kathu is a mining town on the Kalahari edge, with newer face-brick houses, complexes and lodges around the camel thorn veld. Owners use slate and stone on patios, pool surrounds, carports and entrance halls, and rustic stone suits the red sand surroundings. Summers are fiercely hot, so dark slate can burn bare feet in full sun, and UV breaks down sealers fast. Cold winter nights and rare heavy storms add movement, so use flexible adhesive, a full bed and movement joints. Dust makes honed or sealed floors easier to keep clean. Local merchants stock basic tiles, but slate, cladding and special orders are delivered from Kuruman, Kimberley or Gauteng.
Typical tilers tools requests in the area come from:
- Suburban homes: equipping a tiler or homeowner for lounge floors, kitchens, stoeps and braai areas
- Townhouses and complexes: providing compact tools and quiet wet cutting for small jobs in complexes with noise rules
- Farms, lodges and wine estates: equipping builders on farmhouses, lodges and wine estates with tools for large tiling jobs
- New builds and developments: supplying tilers and contractors with full tool kits as houses reach the tiling stage
- Restaurants, hotels and offices: supplying trade-grade saws, trowels and levelling kits for restaurant and hotel floors
- Security and golf estates: supplying cutters and levelling systems for large-format slate in modern estate homes
