Slate wall tiles add texture and depth to a feature wall, a kitchen or a bathroom. SlateTiles.co.za is a free quote service. You fill in one form and we pass your request to independent slate and tile suppliers near you, who quote you directly. They can advise on thickness, finish and fixing. There is no fee and no obligation. We do not sell tiles, we do not do any tiling, and we never give prices. You choose who to deal with.
Types and finishes of slate wall tiles
Slate splits into thin sheets, which makes it lighter than many stones and a good fit for walls. The finish changes the look and how easy the wall is to clean.
- Natural cleft: a rough, layered face with plenty of shadow. It is the classic slate look.
- Honed: a smooth, matt face that wipes clean more easily.
- Brushed or tumbled: softened edges and a worn, rustic feel.
Colours include black, charcoal, green-grey and rustic multicolour with copper, gold and rust tones from iron and other minerals. Tiles come as squares, rectangles and narrow strips that can be laid in a stacked or brick pattern. Ask whether tiles are calibrated or gauged, because uneven thickness changes how the wall looks.
Where slate wall tiles are used
A slate feature wall is popular behind a television, beside a fireplace, in an entrance hall or up a stairwell. Downlights set close to the wall bring out the texture.
In the kitchen, slate tiles for a kitchen wall work well as a slate splashback. Honed slate is easier to wipe. A cleft face can trap grease, so seal it well and expect to clean it more often. Keep an eye on heat: leave the gap that the hob maker specifies.
Slate also suits bathroom walls and shower surrounds when it is waterproofed properly. Outdoors, it can clad a braai wall or a covered patio, though thicker stone cladding is often better for larger exterior walls.
Fixing a slate wall: what to check
Good results start with the wall behind the tiles.
- The wall must be flat, dry, sound and free of dust or old paint that is peeling.
- Use a suitable polymer-modified adhesive and back-butter heavier tiles so there are no voids.
- Check that plasterboard or a timber partition can carry the weight of the tile.
- In wet areas, waterproof the wall before tiling.
- Plan the layout so cuts fall in corners, and allow for sockets and switches.
Seal the finished wall with an impregnating sealer. Clean with a pH-neutral product and no acids, which dull the surface.
What affects your quote
Suppliers quote on your measurements and choices. These points make the biggest difference:
- The wall area in m² and the height, if scaffolding or ladders are needed.
- The finish, colour and tile size or strip format.
- Whether the tiles are calibrated, gauged or uncalibrated.
- The condition of the wall and any preparation or waterproofing.
- Supply only, or supply and install, including adhesive and sealer.
- Delivery to your suburb or farm and the number of boxes.
A photo of the wall and a simple sketch help suppliers quote accurately.
Comparing slate wall tiles quotes
Natural stone varies from batch to batch, and prices move with imports, stock and transport. When quotes arrive, check:
- Exact product: the colour, finish, size and thickness, and whether it is calibrated, so every quote is for the same thing.
- Quantities: the price per m², box, pallet or piece, and how much is allowed for cuts and breakage.
- Stock and delivery: in stock or on order, delivery to site or collection, and any off-loading charge.
- VAT and returns: whether VAT is included, how long the price holds and whether unopened boxes can go back.
What to include in your request
- State the wall area in m² and its height.
- Say where the wall is: lounge, kitchen, bathroom or outdoors.
- Choose a finish and colour, or ask for samples.
- Describe the wall behind: brick, plaster, plasterboard or timber.
- Say whether you want supply only or supply and install.
