Slate, stone and weather in Welkom
Welkom is a planned gold-mining town laid out in circular suburbs, and many uniform mine-era brick houses are now being renovated. Owners replace worn lounge and passage floors with charcoal or grey slate, add slate to stoeps and braai areas, and clad garden walls and entrances in stone. Flat Free State plains bring hard winter frost, so outdoor tiles need frost-tolerant, well-sealed stone and a solid bed. Summer hail marks old tile and fibre-cement roofs, and slate-look sheets from earlier decades may contain asbestos, so have them checked before any work. Local merchants stock common tiles and paving, with larger slate orders delivered from Bloemfontein.
Typical slate floor tiles requests in the area come from:
- Suburban homes: grey slate floors running through the kitchen, dining room and lounge of family homes
- Older and heritage homes: slate hall and passage floors that suit original woodwork and high ceilings
- Townhouses and complexes: slate floors in compact living rooms and kitchens, with noise rules from the body corporate
- New builds and developments: slate floors specified early so screed levels and doorways suit the finished tile
- Restaurants, hotels and offices: slate floors in restaurants, hotel lobbies and showrooms that see heavy foot traffic
- Security and golf estates: large honed slate floor tiles across open-plan living areas in modern estate homes
Why get a quote in Welkom first?
Prices for slate floor tiles in Welkom depend on the exact stone, finish, thickness, quantities, current stock and delivery. A quote based on your details is the quickest way to know what you will pay, and it shows what is included before anything starts.
What to include in your request
- State the floor area in m² for each room.
- Say whether the floor is new screed or an existing floor.
- Name your preferred finish and colour.
- Mention if you have underfloor heating.
- Say if you want supply only or tiling and sealing as well.
The more detail you give, the more accurate your quote will be.
