Slate, stone and weather in Durban
Durban is a warm, humid coastal city where slate is used on verandahs, pool decks, bathrooms and feature walls from Umhlanga and Berea to Westville. Salt air, heavy summer rain and constant humidity grow mould and algae on shaded stone, so choose a non-slip cleft finish, give outdoor areas proper falls and clean with pH-neutral products. Sealing protects against salt and stains, and moisture rising through screeds can cause white efflorescence. Flat roofs and balconies need sound waterproofing under tiles. Tile shops, stone and paving yards and builders' merchants are spread across the metro, and many suppliers deliver to the South Coast, North Coast and inland hills.
Typical slate floor tiles requests in the area come from:
- Coastal and holiday homes: slate floors that stay cool in summer and handle sand tracked in from the beach
- Suburban homes: grey slate floors running through the kitchen, dining room and lounge of family homes
- Security and golf estates: large honed slate floor tiles across open-plan living areas in modern estate homes
- Townhouses and complexes: slate floors in compact living rooms and kitchens, with noise rules from the body corporate
- New builds and developments: slate floors specified early so screed levels and doorways suit the finished tile
- Restaurants, hotels and offices: slate floors in restaurants, hotel lobbies and showrooms that see heavy foot traffic
Why get a quote in Durban first?
No two slate projects in Durban are the same. A quote based on your details shows the real cost of the stone, wastage, delivery and VAT, so you can budget properly and avoid surprises.
What to include in your request
- State the floor area in m² for each room.
- Say whether the floor is new screed or an existing floor.
- Name your preferred finish and colour.
- Mention if you have underfloor heating.
- Say if you want supply only or tiling and sealing as well.
