Slate, stone and weather in Durban
Durban is a warm, humid coastal city where slate is used on verandahs, pool decks, bathrooms and feature walls from Umhlanga and Berea to Westville. Salt air, heavy summer rain and constant humidity grow mould and algae on shaded stone, so choose a non-slip cleft finish, give outdoor areas proper falls and clean with pH-neutral products. Sealing protects against salt and stains, and moisture rising through screeds can cause white efflorescence. Flat roofs and balconies need sound waterproofing under tiles. Tile shops, stone and paving yards and builders' merchants are spread across the metro, and many suppliers deliver to the South Coast, North Coast and inland hills.
Typical black slate tiles requests in the area come from:
- Coastal and holiday homes: black slate showers and decks, sealed carefully against salt air and humidity
- Suburban homes: honed black slate in kitchens, bathrooms and entrance halls of family homes
- Security and golf estates: dark slate floors and feature walls that suit the clean lines of modern estate homes
- Townhouses and complexes: black slate bathrooms and small entrance floors that make compact rooms feel smart
- New builds and developments: black slate chosen early so floor levels, sealing and lighting suit the finished room
- Restaurants, hotels and offices: black slate floors and bar fronts in restaurants, hotels and showrooms
Why get a quote in Durban first?
Prices for black slate tiles in Durban depend on the exact stone, finish, thickness, quantities, current stock and delivery. A quote based on your details is the quickest way to know what you will pay, and it shows what is included before anything starts.
What to include in your request
- State the area in m² and where the tile will go.
- Say whether you want honed, cleft or brushed.
- Mention if it is for a shower or wet area.
- Ask for a sample of the actual batch.
- Say if you want a sealer supplied or tiling included.
