Slate, stone and weather in Stellenbosch
Stellenbosch is a university town and wine region of oak-lined streets, Cape Dutch houses and wine estates. Homes in Die Boord, Dalsig and Welgevonden range from heritage buildings with slate or thatch roofs to security estates with large pools and entertainment terraces. Slate suits stoeps, courtyards, tasting rooms and cellar entrances, and stone cladding suits feature walls and gate pillars. Heritage rules affect external changes, so owners should check before starting. Heavy winter rain keeps shaded stone damp, and dry summers fade sealers. Tile shops, stone and paving yards and merchants serve town and the surrounding wine farms, with deliveries along the Helderberg and Franschhoek valleys.
Typical slate fireplace requests in the area come from:
- Older and heritage homes: slate around a restored period fireplace in an older home with a pressed ceiling
- Security and golf estates: a full-height black slate chimney breast in a modern open-plan lounge on an estate
- Farms, lodges and wine estates: a rustic slate chimney breast in a farmhouse, lodge or guest house lounge
- Suburban homes: a slate surround and hearth in the family lounge, ready for cold Highveld evenings
- Restaurants, hotels and offices: a slate fireplace feature in a restaurant, hotel lounge or lodge reception
- New builds and developments: slate surround planned with the builder so the chimney, hearth and wall are ready
