Slate, stone and weather in Rustenburg
Rustenburg sits below the Magaliesberg, and slate is popular on the patios, braai areas and entrance halls of homes in Waterkloof, Cashan and the newer estates. Mine-linked wealth also feeds lodge and guest-house building towards Sun City and the bushveld, where rustic multicolour slate suits stone walls and thatch. Summer storms bring hail that cracks roof tiles, and fierce sun fades poorly sealed outdoor stone, so sealing matters. Frost is light, but dry heat can crack badly bedded paving. Tile shops, stone and paving yards and builders' merchants serve the town, and suppliers can deliver slate and cladding to outlying farms and lodges.
Typical slate pool surrounds requests in the area come from:
- Suburban homes: a slate deck around the family pool with a braai area and shaded loungers close by
- Security and golf estates: matching slate paving from the entertainment patio to the pool edge in a modern home
- Farms, lodges and wine estates: a large slate deck beside a lodge or guest house pool, with views of the veld
- New builds and developments: pool coping and deck slate planned with the builder so falls and levels are right first time
- Restaurants, hotels and offices: non-slip slate decking for hotel, lodge or restaurant pools used by guests every day
- Townhouses and complexes: a small slate plunge pool deck on a courtyard, subject to body corporate approval
