Slate, stone and weather in Secunda
Secunda is a planned industrial town with neat suburbs, townhouse complexes and newer estates, built around the petrochemical plant. Slate and stone work is mainly patios, braai areas, entrance halls and feature walls, and body corporate rules often shape finish choices. Winter frost, summer storms and industrial dust all affect outdoor stone, so a good penetrating sealer helps with cleaning. Tile shops and merchants in town handle standard supply, with bigger orders from Gauteng. Delivery to farms and smallholdings around Bethal and Trichardt is normal.
Typical slate pool surrounds requests in the area come from:
- Suburban homes: a slate deck around the family pool with a braai area and shaded loungers close by
- Townhouses and complexes: a small slate plunge pool deck on a courtyard, subject to body corporate approval
- Security and golf estates: matching slate paving from the entertainment patio to the pool edge in a modern home
- New builds and developments: pool coping and deck slate planned with the builder so falls and levels are right first time
- Restaurants, hotels and offices: non-slip slate decking for hotel, lodge or restaurant pools used by guests every day
- Farms, lodges and wine estates: a large slate deck beside a lodge or guest house pool, with views of the veld
