Slate, stone and weather in Newcastle
Newcastle is a northern KwaZulu-Natal industrial town in the Drakensberg foothills, with older suburbs like Lennoxton and Fernwood and newer complexes. Owners use charcoal and grey slate on entrance halls and lounges, with rustic slate on patios and braai areas. The weather swings from hot, stormy summers with hail to cold winters with hard frost, so outdoor stone must be dense, well sealed and laid on a solid bed with movement joints. Hail bruises roof tiles and fibre-cement slate-look sheets, and older ones may contain asbestos. Local tile shops and merchants stock common slate and paving, with larger orders delivered from Gauteng or Durban.
Typical slate roof tiles requests in the area come from:
- Suburban homes: natural slate re-roofing on a family home, chosen for its long life and quiet colour
- Townhouses and complexes: matching slate roofs across a cluster, usually after trustee or HOA approval of the material
- Older and heritage homes: like-for-like slate replacement on Victorian and Edwardian roofs, matched to the original colour and size
- New builds and developments: slate specified at design stage so trusses and battens are built for the extra weight
- Restaurants, hotels and offices: slate roofing on hotels, restaurants and showrooms that want a lasting, high-end roof
- Farms, lodges and wine estates: slate roofs on farmhouses, lodges and guest houses where a natural stone look suits the setting
Why get a quote in Newcastle first?

What to include in your request
- State the roof area in m² and the pitch if you know it.
- Say whether you want supply only or supply and install.
