Slate, stone and weather in Midrand
Midrand sits between Johannesburg and Pretoria and is full of estates, office parks and townhouse complexes. Slate and stone go into entrance halls, courtyards, pool decks and feature walls, and commercial fit-outs use them in reception areas and restaurants. Hail and summer storms test outdoor stone, and body corporate or HOA approval often shapes colour choices. Because Midrand has so many new builds, tile shops and paving yards often deal with developers and contractors as well as homeowners. Delivery inside the corridor between the two cities is straightforward.
Typical slate pool surrounds requests in the area come from:
- Security and golf estates: matching slate paving from the entertainment patio to the pool edge in a modern home
- Townhouses and complexes: a small slate plunge pool deck on a courtyard, subject to body corporate approval
- New builds and developments: pool coping and deck slate planned with the builder so falls and levels are right first time
- Restaurants, hotels and offices: non-slip slate decking for hotel, lodge or restaurant pools used by guests every day
- Suburban homes: a slate deck around the family pool with a braai area and shaded loungers close by
- Farms, lodges and wine estates: a large slate deck beside a lodge or guest house pool, with views of the veld
